Leonardo’s name appears in the account book of the painters’ confraternity, the Compagnia di San Luca (“Company of St. Luke”) in Florence, which implies that he was working as painter in his own right.

Death in Rome of Leon Battista Alberti, Florentine humanist, intellectual and architect, and the most important art theorist of the 15th century. His treatise On Painting, published in Italian in 1436 had a seminal impact on artistic practices in Florence and on the work of Leonardo.
