Head of the Virgin in three-quarter view facing to the right Late 1470s
One of Leonardo’s most hauntingly beautiful drawings, this is probably a preparatory study for the head of the Virgin in the
Madonna and Child with St. Anne, Louvre, Paris. In this drawing, Leonardo exploits the potential of soft black and red chalk to achieve a seamlessly blended tone and the desired
sfumato or “smoky effect” by which forms are defined purely in terms of light and shadow.
