Adoration of the Magi, Gentile da Fabriano, 1423
< previous | next >

Leonardo’s father is employed in Florence as a notary by Cosimo de’ Medici, il Vecchio, “the Old”.

Palla Strozzi, merchant banker and once the wealthiest man in Florence before the rise of Cosimo de’ Medici, dies in exile in Padua. The altarpiece he commissioned in 1423 from Gentile da Fabriano, the most renowned artist of his time, provided inspiration for Leonardo’s Adoration of the Magi, commissioned in 1481.
